Don't Get Nervous about Being Nervous!

Most people get nervous when it comes to having their headshots taken. Especially since they are an important career tool.  First I want to say that it is TOTALLY NORMAL :). I actually like it when my clients are a little nervous. It's an adrenaline rush which gives you energy. It's genuine emotion which is always great for photos. No matter what's going on with you, I(and many others) can turn it into a dynamic photographical moment. Nerves have depth and if respected, can open the door to wonderful unintended moments. Sometimes these end up being our favorite shots. The worse thing you can do is spend the shoot trying to "relax". I mean ask yourself this. Have you ever been able to relax when someone says "Relax"? And it's even harder to do when you tell yourself to relax.

So what can you do you ask?

Try casual conversation throughout your shoot.

Mind you, you need to allow your photographer to direct you and do their job, but there is nothing wrong with asking them about their favorite Netflix binge. This will help you get out of your head and connect with your photographer.

Be Prepared.

Have your clothing chosen and steamed a few days prior to your shoot. Ask for your photographer's guidance. We are experts and know how to guide you to personalize your shoot. Make sure you're not made to conform to the photographers brand. Our brand should be your brand. We are there to capture you at your best and at you being you. It's a collaboration.

If you need a root touch up, for god's sake, have it done, unless you want spend money on retouching.

Leave in plenty of time to get to the studio. If you have to rush, you will inject yourself with icky anxiety (and you might get sweaty too). Why not find a nearby cafe and give yourself 30 minutes to relax and enjoy a latte (or whatever drink you like). Then enjoy a lovely stroll to the studio.

Celebrate this shoot with a treat like a mani-pedi (yup, men too :). Make plans with your significant other or a friend to go out for dinner or a glass of wine after the shoot (gelato if your'e under 21:). You're going to look amazing, so take advantage of it.

There is something most people don't realize about having their headshots taken. No matter what your headshot needs are, these photos are capturing a point in the timeline of your life. You will look back on the experience and think about what your life was at that time and how much you've grown since then. These photos will have lovely sentimental value. Of course I'm a photographer and I have a strong romantic bond with photos, but you can too.

I'll finish with this.

Have fun and let go.

and....you are all beautiful!
